Haul of Books 2012: Books Received Vol. 1 (Post-Christmas Edition)

Everything you see below are books (and a movie) I got over Christmas, whether as presents or through spending my Christmas money.  Needless to say, I bought a lot of stuff.

Before you check out the books, though, I've got a few questions:

I haven't done one of these in a while, which means I'm really far behind on all the weird stuff that has arrived on my doorstep (for school, for review, for teaching, etc.).

So now you get to see the crazy stuff I've been looking at in the last few months.

Another edition of things I've added to my collection.  Some of these are research selections, as I bought them around the same time when I was putting together a syllabus on postcolonial fiction.  As such, the books below are an eclectic bunch.

The Haul of Books 2.0: Books Received Vol. 3

It's time for yet another edition of the Haul of Books!  I'll have one more edition after this (and more in the future).  I'm still playing catch-up.  The last few weeks have been busy busy with school and teaching American Lit (and lots and lots of science fiction), so the pages on this blog have been relatively quiet.  But no more!  I've got two weeks off, lots of books to talk about, and lots of rants to assault your eyes with.

Now I'll shut up and get to the books:

I've got more books for you, which is pretty awesome if you are a lover of books.  Me?  I'm a lover of books.  I love books almost as much as I love the sound of my own voice.  Wait...

Anywho!  I've got one last edition to do after this one, and then I'll be caught up.  Unless twenty more books show up on my doorstep... *drools*

The Haul of Books 2.0: Books Received Vol. 1 (Special Reboot Edition)

I haven't done a Haul of Books thing in a long time.  The result?  A pile of books I've received for review which I haven't told you all about, with a smaller pile of things I've purchased for myself that I also haven't told you about.  Well, I can't let them sit there without at least telling you about them.  So the Haul of Book begins anew!

Considering that I just got back from a conference in which books were involved, it seems like perfect timing to have a new edition of the Haul of Books.

The Haul of Books 2010: Stuff For Me v.26 (Birthday Edition)

I suspect that this edition of the Haul of Books will be less interesting to all of you than previous ones.  Still, in case any of you are getting into cooking or care what I got for my birthday, I thought it would be nice to do a special edition to show what my crazy mother got for me after indicating that I wanted my very own Crockpot.  I haven't purchased a Crockpot yet, but you can bet that I will be soon enough!

Some things I've learned over the past few months:

• The mailman is a moron and thinks very thick books that obviously don't fit into my mailbox should instead be folded up and crammed in there anyway.
• People have my address who shouldn't and are at least kind enough to send me things I like instead of trying to kill me in my sleep (i.e. they send me books).
• Bookstores are my crack.

With that in mind, here are the books that I've managed to add to my collection:

Haul of Books 2010: Stuff For Me v.24 (Derrida Edition)

I have a few more lovely books for school that I want to let you all know about, although it occurs to me that these may be of even less interest to most of you than they are to me, since they're not even genre-based.  But  who am I to say what you're all interested in, right?

This edition rounds up almost all of the remaining books for my schoolwork.  There are still a handful of lingering books here or there, which I'll throw up here in a future edition, but I won't know what those are for a few more weeks (my science fiction/utopia course has four weeks of "you'll all decide what we're reading").

It's about time I showed you all some of what I will be reading over the next few months.  This semester is probably one of the most difficult I have ever had.  Both of my courses are theory-oriented (one on the later works of Jacques Derrida, who some of you have probably heard of, and the other on utopia and science fiction), I have to practice for a Spanish exam, which I'm not close to being prepared for, I am teaching two classes, rather than one and a quarter, and I am finally working on my M.A. thesis, which I'll probably talk about on this blog at some point.  But at least the things I'm working on are things I enjoy.

So, all but one of the following books are for my utopia and science fiction course, which is probably pretty obvious when you see the titles.  Here's the image:

I have a few more hangovers from that Books-a-Million excursion from a few weeks ago.  Two of these books were purchased because I knew about them beforehand, and really wanted to have the chance to read them in the future (Shine and WWW:  Wake).  Then there's one impulse buy (Jacob's Ladder) and one subscription delivery (Popular Culture).

Last month I went to Books-a-Million to use a coupon I received for being a member.  The cool thing about Books-a-Million is that they have so many good books for good prices, that it's almost impossible to not spend money while you're there.  That's why I only go every few months...

In any case, the following books are half of the books I bought while I was there.  The price tags are not the price I paid for all of these books, though.  Coupons are wonderful things!

Haul of Books 2010: Stuff For Me v.20

The University of Florida bookstore had a clearance sale a few weeks ago.  I discovered it via my superpower, which is kind of a Sixth Sense meets Spiderman meets Wolverine's nostrils.  The selection was somewhat limited--a lot of old textbooks and politics books--but there were a few books that were more to my liking.  All but one of the following books (Harmony is not one of them) is from that sale.  Hopefully they'll be of interest to you all.

Have you read anything by Karen Miller before? If not, then you should. She's amazing with dialogue and she knows how to tell a good epic fantasy story. I've read two of her novels (both of which are set in the same world as the books below) and loved them.

Lucky me, I get to review a few more of her books! Then again, I'd probably read them anyway...

It almost seems like I'm always buying stuff for myself, rather than receiving things for review.  Well, that's not true!  You know how I know?  Because the following book arrived in my mailbox from the far away and extremely exotic land of Australia.  It came in an envelope made of kangaroo fur, and when I opened it, the sweet sound of didgeridoo's playing "Down Under" by Men At Work wafted into my living room, followed by a floating can of Vegemite.

Okay, so none of that is actually true, except the part about it coming from Australia.  But it's still cool to get stuff from far away lands, no?

Being overly obsessed with the printed medium, I made time to peruse the bookstores while I was in Lincoln. And boy did I find some nice stuff!
