To other news, I was reading a post here and I thought I'd ask anyone here what magazines you read. I mean any magazines, even ones that aren't literature based. If you read Vogue, well, then say so. Only zines count too! Reading that post, though, made me realize how much I'm missing out. I had hoped after I quit working and started packing to come to UC Santa Cruz that I would get to subscribe to a whole bunch of magazines. I even made a list, but unfortunately that never happened.
I'm currently subscribed to:
Reptiles Magazine
Writer's Digest
Smithsonian Magazine
Yeah, nothing really related to the field I am writing short stories for, which disturbs me. I might have to dig up some money and buy some subscriptions. It's also sad that the short story market is dying! There has been a lot of talk in the blogging world about this and it really scares me. Some of the best stories out there are short stories. I'll have to write a post about why I think the short is dying!
Anyway, so there you all have it! Comment and join up in the canon project!
The short is dying because it's a weird ... thing. Yeah, I can't explain that thought any further, but you were crying about my lax commenting habits, and this is the best you're going to get. :p
ReplyDeleteI can agree that shorts are a totally different thing than the novel, not just because of length, but in form too.
ReplyDeleteAnd you didn't tell me what magazines you subscribed to, if any!
Also, I hope you'll be joining in the discussions on the canon project! You've read a lot more in the genre of fantasy than I have, mostly because I got tired of reading the same story over and over, so I think your input would be great. You've read a lot of older fantasy too--pre-1990--so I hope you would join in!
*Grumble*
ReplyDeleteI don't subscribe to magazines. Short stories irritate me, since my7 favourite aspect of any story is the characterisation and that's usually minimal in shorts.
And yeah, I've read a fair amount of older fantasy, but that doesn't mean I finished it. :p There are huge amounts of dross out there, and while much of it is rubbish, some is decent dross ... but not decent enough for a canon. Also, I have weird taste.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll press-gang me into it ...
